Criterion.com Case Study

Self-directed thoughts on a usability problem

PROJECT OVERVIEW

As an avid fan of The Criterion Collection, I noticed that their website does not provide an option to include Out of Print titles into My Collection. I designed a small but important solution that I believe solves the problem.

NOTE: In August 2020, criterion.com incorporated part of my Case Study into their website. Users are now capable of adding Out of Print titles into My Collection.*

THE CHALLENGE

The current Criterion.com design allows for the user to add a purchased movie into their online collection but only if it is still in print.
THE APPROACH

A Use Case defines all the ways to use a system to achieve a particular goal. I made sure to define the user’s needs with a sequence of simple steps and then mapped the User Flow. The user journey begins with searching for their purchased movie and ends with the user successfully adding an out of print movie into their collection.

USER FLOW
I created a user flow to help visualize how the user will navigate adding an out of print movie into their collection.

TASK ONE
Provide the User a way to add their Out of Print titles to their Collection.

TASK TWO
Verify the User’s selection.

TASK THREE
Provide the User a way to sort their Out of Print titles within their Collection.
