MCAD UX Certificate:
User Experience Design and the Mobile App

PROJECT OVERVIEW

While working towards my MCAD UX Certificate, I created an app that would allow a user to search for a movie or television show and find where or how they can stream it.

SKILLS & TOOLS UTILIZED

UX Research & Design
Balsamiq
Marvel App
Powerpoint
User testing
Refining user flows

THE CHALLENGE

Creating a uniqe journey allowing the user to discover where their movies or television programs were streaming. Then allowing the user to determine where and how they would view it.

THE APPROACH

Hoping to gain more experience towards developing strong UX skills, I started with the big picture using spheres of influence, narrowing down into a user journey and various user flows. From there, I created various fidelity levels of prototypes for research, interviews and user testing.

SPHERES OF INFLUENCE

I helped identify primary, secondary & tertiary influences for a user’s viewing habits. Starting with various forms of media consumption, I then worked my way out to various media hosting websites / apps. From there I identified other resources people would use to watch movies in public or at home.

JOURNEY MAPS & FLOWS

PAPER PROTOTYPE

Some examples of test questions I asked:

-Let’s discover available apps, where do you think you click?

-If you would like to search for apps where do you think you would click?

-What does the “circle I” imply to you?

-What would you do to remove the word bubble?

-What do the arrows on the right-hand side indicate to you?

-How would you get to the Netflix app?

TROUBLESHOOTING

Through testing I realized several problems. I realized the required fields were not being clearly conveyed. Also I would need to resolve a lack of confirmation on multiselect and confusion with the selection icons.

REFINING THE FLOW

FURTHER REFINING

After using the feedback from the user testing, I was able to resolve several problems. I more clearly defined the fields and simplified the journey.
