Roku Channel Folder Case Study

Self-directed thoughts on a usability problem

PROJECT OVERVIEW

As a user of Roku, I would like to organize similar channels into groupings to make it easier to find them.  I designed a solution that I strongly believe solves the problem.

THE CHALLENGE

Provide a Roku user the option to group similar channels into a singular folder.
THE APPROACH

A Use Case defines all the ways to use a system to achieve a particular goal. I made sure to define the user’s needs with a sequence of simple steps and then mapped the User Flow. The user’s journey begins by turning on Roku and ends with the user’s ability to successfully edit the newly created folder.

USER FLOW
I created a user flow to help visualize how the user will navigate having a folder option.

TASK ONE
Access the User’s Folders from the Home menu.

TASK TWO
Provide a “Create Folder” function listed in Shortcuts.

TASK THREE
Make the folder easily accessible within the Channel Menu.

TASK FOUR
Folder Options without Channel including naming the folder.

Folder Options with Channel including emptying the folder.

TASK FIVE
By selecting a channel & its options, provide the ability to add it to a folder.
