Roku Smart Folder Case Study

Self-directed thoughts on a usability problem

PROJECT OVERVIEW

As a Roku user, I would like to organize channels, movies and shows into folder playlists without downloading a separate app, like Plex or PlayOn.  I designed a solution that I strongly believe solves the problem.

SKILLS & TOOLS UTILIZED

ROKU SMART FOLDER PROTOTYPE

THE CHALLENGE

Provide a Roku user the ability to group selected channels and sync movies or shows into a singular Smart Folder.
THE APPROACH

I defined the user’s needs with a sequence of simple tasks and then mapped the User Flow. The user’s journey begins by turning on Roku and ends with the user’s ability to successfully edit the newly created Smart Folder.

USER FLOW
After defining the user’s tasks, I created a user flow to help visualize how they will navigate the Smart Folder option.

TASK ONE
Define and create a Smart Folder.

TASK TWO
Provide an option menu to customize the newly created Smart Folder.

TASK THREE
Provide the ability to rename the Smart Folder.

TASK FOUR
Create a search option to Sync Channels into the user’s Smart Folder.

TASK FIVE
Create a search option to Sync Events, such as movies or shows, into the user’s Smart Folder.

TASK SIX
Have an option to Remove Channels and / or Events from the Smart Folder.
